Now I know I’m a little late with this but BEAST’s Junhyung had his solo debut in December with the mini album ‘Flower’.  Junhyung  was heavily involved with the writing and composition of this album and his personality really shine through on the songs. Released at the end of the year it was the perfect ending of a great k-pop year. Having a hip-hop/R&B direction many of the tracks reminded me of the type of music that rapper Drake makes. Junhyung’s deep voice and simple production give his tracks an understated effect and the album has some great features from other artists.

The title song ‘Flower’ features slinky synths and a simple beat which just shows off Junhyungs amazing flow. It takes a layered effect and lyrically speaks about a lost love with strong imagery, Junhyung really knows how to paint a picture.  By far my favourite track on the album has to be ‘Anything’ featuring the lovely G.NA, led by piano chords her vocals add a new flavour that would be missed if she didn’t feature on this song, reminiscent of a classic rap song both their voices are juxtaposed with each other and lyrically talking of being there for someone this song is the icing on the cake.

Other tracks include ‘Slow’ which is a throwback ol’ school track which talks about passion and taking it slow. There is also a piano version of the song ‘Caffeine’ featuring Yo Seop. A simple piano led track with heart breaking strings this ballad talks about being defeated, something being both so bad and good.

The only downside to this album is the use of English, it’s either not needed or not used very well, other than that it was a great album and great first effort from Junhyung
